Usually, switches are connected using a three-core cable. In case there are more than two switches on the circuit, for instance, over three floors on stairways, sometimes intermediate switches are used in between the other 2-way switches.

3 way switch:
It is a common type of lighting switch that makes it possible for controlling electrical fixtures such as ceiling light from two different locations in a room. In a large room or a hallway, for instance, installation of 3 way switches at both ends allows you to turn the light fixture on and off from two different locations in a room. These types of switches are used in pairs and have special wiring.
3 way switch is a variation of the standard single-pole switch that controls a light only from one location.  Four-way switch is another type that is used along with two or three-way switches for controlling an electric device from more than two locations. The combination might be used in great rooms or open-plan homes or in large kitchens where a central point of lighting fixtures may be controlled from more than two locations.
