The importance of types of electrical switches

Although there is a plethora of electrical switches available, but the most uncommon among them are changeover switches and push-button switch. They aren’t uncommon because they are of less usage, they are uncommon because we are unaware of the importance these devices hold in the smooth functioning of electrical current.
A push button switch is made of a simple electric switch mechanism which controls portions of a machine or a process. The buttons are typically made of hard material such as plastic or metal. Its surface is usually shaped to accommodate the human finger or hand, so that the electronic switch can be pushed or de-pressed with ease. These switches are also known as a biased switch or a momentary switch where the user pushes for turning it on and push off to turn it down. This type of mechanism is also known as a push-to-make or push-to-break mechanism. The ones with the push-to-make mechanism are a type of push-button switch that operates by the switch making contact with the electronic system when the button is pressed and breaks the electricity flow when released. For example, a keyboard button. On the other hand, a push-to-break electronic switch breaks contact when the button is pressed and makes contact when it is released.

A changeover switch is a contrast to push-over buttons. They are designed to transfer a domestic or industrial electricity from the commercial power grid to a local generator in times of outage. They are also known as ‘transfer switches’ as they connect directly to the generator, commercial power supply or line and the domestic line. Thus, when there is a power outage, the homeowner or business owner can switch over to the generator via a changeover switch. Although changeover switches too come in a variety, but mostly they are subdivided into two categories: automatic or manual. An automatic changeover switch automatically switches over during an outage, without the need for manual switching. However, the manual model requires the homeowner to flip the switch to redirect the power drawn from the commercial grid to the generator.

Therefore, although build for various purposes, these electrical switches are reshaping the way switches were seen in the past. Built with the latest technology and innovation, these switches are equally safe, energy-efficient and hold a strong aesthetic appeal.
